The Harlem Renaissance Movement
History of the Movement
Harlem Renaissance was a cultural movement that started in the 1920s. The renaissance didn't end until the mid 1930s. The Harlem Renaissance Movement started because of the people effected by the Great Migration. Some poets of this time were Langston Hughes, Ana Bontepms, and
Sterling A. Brown.
Analysis
Langston Hughes written poem titled Mother to Son, and it was an African American mother talking to her son about her hardships in life. She told her son her life was not easy, and she struggled through most of it. She also tells him that she didn't give up when it got too hard, she remained strong.
Literary Devices
Diction- throughout the poem the speaker uses word like "ain't", and "reachin". I an te ll that the mother was southern.
Repetition- the mither repeats the phrase "life for me ain't been no crystal stair", I believethe author used this repetition to show that the mother really srruggled and wanted her son ti realize that her life was ot great but she was still standing and strong woman.

Mother to Son
BY LANGSTON HUGHES
Well, son, I’ll tell you:
Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.
It’s had tacks in it,
And splinters,
And boards torn up,
And places with no carpet on the floor--
Bare.
But all the time
I’se been a-climbin’ on,
And reachin’ landin’s,
And turnin’ corners,
And sometimes goin’ in the dark
Where there ain’t been no light.
So boy, don’t you turn back.
Don’t you set down on the steps
’Cause you finds it’s kinder hard.
Don’t you fall now--
For I’se still goin’, honey,
I’se still climbin’,
And life for me ain’t been no crystal stair. _
